DIY: Yummy Coffee Vanilla Body Scrub!

Body scrubs are wonderful, they remove the dead cells from your skin surface, revealing the younger cells beneath, and leave your skin smooth and soft. Scrubbing really helps in making your skin healthier, but it is important to use scrub made with natural ingredients only since your skin will absorb anything that comes in contact with.

Body Scrubs contain 3 primary components:

Exfoliant: a coarse material which can help you to rub away the dead skin cells of your skin. The most common are sugar and salt but you can also use coffee ground, oat meal, rice bran, almond meal, flax meal, ground nut shells,…

Carrier Oil: or base oil, hold the mixture together and moisturise the skin. You can use coconut oil, sweet almond oil, grape seed oil, sunflower oil,…

Fragrance: The easiest way to scent your scrub is with essentials oils, dried flowers or other natural essences. On top of adding smell to the mixture, many essences come with specific properties that will benefit you in many ways.

I have been trying a lot of combinations for myself. Playing with different exfoliants, oils and fragrances. I will share with you here my ultimate combination. The exfoliant is gentle to my skin and it smells like a dessert, I just love it!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 Cup Ground Coffee
  • 1 Cup Brown Sugar
  • 1/2 Cup Coconut Oil
  • 1 Tablespoon Vanilla Extract
  • 1 Tablespoon Ground Cinnamon

Directions

Melt coconut oil if it is solidified. Mix all ingredients together and end with gradually pouring the coconut oil to the mixture. Stop pouring  the coconut oil when the scrub reaches your preferred consistency. I personally like it really oily, but you can opt for a slightly dry consistency, close to moist sand.

I chose sugar as the main exfoliant since sugar dissolves easily in water. I prefer brown sugar over white, since the smell of brown sugar is much stronger. I love ground coffee as exfoliant as well but coffee ground are more difficult to dissolve in water, making it more messy to use (be careful not to clog your tub). I still chose to use ground coffee but in a smaller quantity, because coffee is rich in antioxidants, making it very beneficial for the skin. Caffeine has also been proven to help reduce cellulite and make my skin feel energised after use. I chose coconut oil for its impressive benefits on the skin and because it is widely available in the Philippines. Coconut oil has a pleasant subtile smell and leave my skin feeling nourished and smooth. I add vanilla extract and cinnamon since the smell combine really well with the coffee and brown sugar.

Storage

Store in a airtight container or a mason jar for up to 6 months.

Use

Apply in circular motion, rinse et voilà! Make sure not to soap after use, it’s better to keep the oil on your skin until total absorption. I use this scrub once to twice a week and it is more than enough. Our skin are sensitive by nature and it is better not to over exfoliate even if using natural ingredients.
